Every year, we have a crazy tradition on New Year's morning when we run barefoot in the snow to some place outside. It started out with my grandmother who believed that if you ran barefoot to the barn and back (in whatever you slept in) on New Year's morning, you'd be healthy for the entire year. So, I'd shoelessly run to the barn once a year every Jan. 1. Today, since we don't have a barn in the backyard, we ran from the front door to the sidewalk. The distance was perfect. I learned the distance between the front door to the sidewalk correlates with the time it takes for your nerves to tell your brain that they're in extreme pain. At that point, if you keep going, you'll be back inside. We cried a little, dried off our feet, warmed up by the fire, drank hot chocolate and ate Dutch baby pancakes, which is another little Lima family tradition.
